Memorial Day (poem)

By Murray Kiok

The last day of May is a national holiday
meant to remember our soldiers on this day
who fought overseas to keep us at home free
continuing to live peacefully in a democracy

Over time it has become a time of celebration
north and south throughout the entire nation
now it has become a three-day weekend
to gather for fun with family and friends

Eisenhower warned us against the Military
Industrial Complex, which is an adversary
of peace and tranquility led by industries
who are more interested in their prosperity

At times US troops have been sent overseas
to countries where people were not pleased
in Afghanistan, why was our army involved
it would take Sherlock Holmes to get that solved

There are many Veterans Against all Wars
they have seen their blood pour out of pores
reminding us of Eisenhower's powerful words
which overtime congress has acted absurd
